Scar therapy treatment is used to stimulate the body's natural healing processes to create changes within the tissue. It is a helpful technique for improving the appearance and flexibility of scars, especially after surgery or injury using massage, fascial release, therapy tools and self-care advice to help with recovery. Scar tissue is naturally fibrotic and less mobile and its lack of mobility can often lead to further symptoms presenting within the body.
How can it help?
- Reduce common symptoms such as pain and sensitivity or numbness, at the site of the scar and any associated areas such as hip and back.
- Can be useful for puckering or tightness
- Mobilise fibrous thick scar tissue or scar adhesions
- Increases blood flow to the area to promote healing
- Reduces the appearance of scars
Will there be any changes to my scar?
You may notice some immediate changes, or these may take some time to present themselves. Scar therapy cannot make your scar disappear, but it can help to change its appearance and relieve any uncomfortable symptoms associated.
When should I come in for scar therapy?
It is recommended to come in for treatment 8 weeks post-surgery. It can be helpful to begin gentle treatment at home as soon as you feel comfortable which includes regular moisturising and some gentle massage. Scar therapy is beneficial any time post 8 weeks, even if your scar is years old.
*If you have concerns about your scar or are unsure if scar massage is right for you, it’s a good idea to consult with a your healthcare professional.
