A 17th Century Garden
The Chelsea Physic Garden is one of the oldest botanical gardens in London. Established in 1673, the garden is located next to the Thames in the heart of Chelsea. The garden was originally created as a place to study medicinal plants by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. Today, it stands as a living museum and is known for its focus on the importance of plants in human life. The site spans 4 acres and is home to around 5000 species of plants, including a number of rare and endangered species. The specimens on display focus on practical, edible and medicinal plants, offering visitors a unique perspective on the use of flora in food and medicine. The gardens feature a variety of different areas and themes, including a tropical corridor and glasshouse, showcasing varieties of exotic plants native to different climate zones.
A Peaceful Retreat
A visit to the Chelsea Physic Garden offers a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of London's busy streets, providing multiple climate zones and themed areas, including the World Woodland Garden and the Garden of Medicinal plants. Each section of the Garden provides a fascinating insight into plant science and botany, educating visitors on the close relationship between humans and plants throughout the local history of the area. The site also hosts regular workshops, family-friendly activities and guided tours, ensuring there is something for everyone, no matter if you enjoy a serene walk amongst the incredible plantlife, or you wish to educate yourself on the botanical history and importance of the Chelsea Physic Garden.
This incredible garden remains a place of peace, beauty and learning, and stands as a living, visitable testament to the crucial relationship between people and plantlife.
