‘The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art…’ – Leonardo da Vinci
In celebration of Foot Awareness month, we thought we'd share with you some interesting facts and tips on keeping your feet healthy and in peak condition; after all, we only get one pair and we need to take good care of them!
Top tips to prevent foot problems
1. Wash your feet everyday - use warm, soapy water and don't forget to clean inbetween your toes. Dry them well. This step will prevent fungal infections.
2. Do regular calf stretches - to help keep your feet supple and encourage good mobility through the ankle.
3. Pay attention to your socks - wear socks that fit you well, and change them everyday to avoid sweaty feet.
4. Trim your toenails - use efficient tools, cut them straight across, not too short and down at the corner. This will prevent ingrown toenails.
5. Keep them moisturised - if you suffer from dry skin, moisturise your feet before bed to help. Avoid inbetween the toes as this can lead to fungal infections.
6. Wear correct footwear - it's important to wear the right footwear for your feet. Have your feet measured if you're unsure and seek professional advice if you think have any unresolved issues that need further investigation.
7. Rotate your shoes - this will prevent fungal infections in the future.
8. Check your feet regularly - giving your feet the once over will help to spot any changes that can be dealt with before they worsen.
What is Podiatry?
Podiatry is the field of medicine that specialises in assessing, diagnosing and treating conditions of the foot and the lower limb. A podiatrist can also give you advice on footwear, gait analysis and foot health.
When should I see a Podiatrist?
You should visit a podiatrist if you suffer from any of the following:
1. Your feet are hurting - a podiatrist will assess the problem and plan the best course of action.
2. Your symptoms seem to be getting worse - a problem isn't improving naturally, or within 3 weeks of self care.
3. You wish to prevent foot issues - regular check ups can help to prevent any problems arising.
