Dear Friends, our much loved pelvic health physio Tracey Matthews wants to share a deeply personal journey that reflects the daily struggles many face, a journey that has ignited her passion for making a difference; please read her story below.
"Recently, I took on the challenge of my first ultra marathon, scaling the heights of Ben Nevis. But this is just the beginning; I’ve committed to completing the Rat Race trilogy, which includes three grueling ultra marathons.
On August 31, 2024, my brother-in-law and I set out in freezing temperatures, ready to tackle one of the toughest races of our lives. We had prepared diligently, packing the mandatory gear to keep us safe. However, we were met with an unexpected heatwave, which caught us off guard. The first leg of our journey was a challenging 13-mile run, and as we approached the ascent of Ben Nevis, we faced tough terrain, muddy bogs, and soaked feet. Despite the stunning views, the physical toll was immense. At one point, I found myself overwhelmed, battling heat exhaustion and fatigue. A medic advised me to turn back, but with the unwavering support of my brother-in-law, I pressed on. We reached the summit, but the journey down was equally grueling. Each step was a testament to resilience, driven by the beauty around us and the promise of what lies ahead.
So why undertake such a challenge? It began with a simple need for a goal. I thrive on setting targets, and this was no ordinary race. About 18 months ago, a dear friend’s husband faced a life-altering battle with sepsis. Just weeks before, we were enjoying carefree moments together, and suddenly he found himself in a coma, fighting for his life. Today, he faces daily struggles that most of us take for granted - like simply walking to the bathroom. His journey has been a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of seizing every moment. While I can choose to run up a mountain, he has had his ability to cycle, to share joyful moments with his six-year-old son, taken from him. I am running not just for myself, but for him. I am raising funds to purchase an adaptive bike that will enable him to reclaim a piece of his normal life, to cycle his son to school, and to enjoy precious moments together. Our goal is to raise £5,000 for this adaptive bike, with any additional funds going to the Sepsis Foundation. I want to emphasize that every penny raised will go directly to this cause; I have covered all my personal expenses for this challenge myself. If you can spare even a small contribution, it will make a world of difference. Together, we can help restore a sense of normalcy and joy to a family facing unimaginable challenges."
Thank you for considering supporting this vital cause. Your generosity will help us bring hope back into their lives.
