I’m Baz, a Mum of two boys, aged 2.5 and 4. Four years ago I knew nothing about Women’s Health Physios (WHP) and now I honestly feel they could be my specialist topic on Mastermind! I’m also a PT in Wandsworth and work with around 50 clients each week, who all want to get a stronger pelvic floor and core. So personally and professionally I get it. I understand what it feels like to be worried about or disconnected from your body.
My fist birth was fairly traumatic and when I found myself pregnant again 6 months later I was really worried and scared. I just didn’t know who to turn to help me with this anxiety, so I called Christien at White Hart - who had been so brilliant after my first birth. She didn’t need to do an assessment, she had my notes - but what she did over 60 minutes was listen with compassion and knowledge to my story. I left feeling that just maybe there was a chance I could do this. And you know what, I did.
Now don’t get me wrong – I am not saying that going to see a WHP when you’re pregnant protects you from complications at all. What I am saying is that it gives you information which you can use to make a plan. I regularly send my pregnant clients for check-ups and they always come back empowered. It may not always be what they want to hear but knowledge is everything when it comes to our bodies and especially when it comes to being prepared for child birth. So psychologically and in terms of birth preparation – it’s a good move to check in with a WHP.
It's also important to realise that pain and discomfort during pregnancy is not par for the course. Whether this is a dragging feeling or pubic, hip, pelvic or lower back pain, a WHP is likely to be able to relieve the discomfort. Pain is exhausting and when you add that on to being pregnant and it’s not a great combination! There is so much that a WHP can do – their tool box is wide reaching and because they have such an holistic and in-depth approach to the pelvic region, you can be confident they won’t leave any stone unturned when it comes to supporting you.
I think that’s more than enough flag flying from me – but before I end I want to leave you with one thing. Please do not be worried about exposing your private parts to these women. Let’s face it nobody does this job unless they love it - they are so well equipped to help us, I just wish that there were more of them around!!
